Hard cover dust wrapper, 246pp. Very good+. With a bullet lodged in his tail and the imperial cipher of a crowned letter "N" burnt on his left flank, a diminutive Arab stallion drew crowds to Pall Mall, London, in 1823. Sightseers came to gaze at the horse advertised as "Bonaparte's personal charger", whose career had spanned the whole of the Napoleonic Wars, who, to the sound of marching songs had trotted, cantered and galloped from the Mediterranean to Paris, Italy, Germany and Austria, and at the age of 19, had walked 3000 miles to Moscow and back. Since then, both dead and alive, this horse with the same sonorous name as Napoleon's great victory, Marengo, has been a star exhibit in Britain. At London's earliest military museum his articulated skeleton was seen by Queen Victoria and displayed as the horse that had carried his master at Austerlitz in 1805, at Jena in 1806, at Wagram in 1809, in the Russian Campaign of 1812, and at Waterloo in 1815. In telling the story of Marengo, Jill Hamilton shows an unexpected side to the Emperor. She explores Napoleon's enormous regard for horses as well as why it was Marengo, and Marengo alone, who became part of the Napoleonic legend - not Jaffa, Ali, Desiree or any of Napoleon's many mounts.

Livre Edition originale Signé
Soft cover. Etat : Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 650 pages. Published in 2000. The author's third novel. Michael Chabon's masterpiece. The First British Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition Thus is now rare. Features a stunningly beautiful Cover Design by Photonica, which rivals Marc Burckhardt's celebrated DJ design for the First American Edition, the true first. Presents, in a lovely "Paperback Original" format, Michael Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay". A timeless achievement: The author's eloquent and moving tribute to the innate ability of the refugee/exile to survive and to prevail, to escape from, outwit, and outlast the inimical forces of History in all of the latter's injustice, cruelty, and arbitrariness. "The young star of American letters" (Washington Post Cover Blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Michael Chabon collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Michael Chabon. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. In addition, the author also boldly drew in his signature-key, the novel's cunning "freedom" motif, which has now become an integral part of Chabon's signature for the novel. This title is a great book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First British Edition/First Printing (2000/2001) still available online and despite its imperfection (creasing on the fragile spine and browning of page edges) is still in fine condition overall: Clean, crisp, and bright. It is priced accordingly. A rare signed copy thus. Selected by The New Yorker Magazine as one of "Twenty Writers for the 21st Century". Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay". One of the most brilliant writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MICHAEL CHABON TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 184115492X. Signed by Author.

Octavo. Original brown boards, titles to spine gilt, green endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrations throughout the text. Very slight indentation at the head of spine and shallow bump tot edge of the upper board, light spotting to the top edge of the text block. An excellent copy with the jacket, of which the lower edges of the inner flaps are slightly curled from being in a jacket protector. First edition, first impression of this well-received popular history of the discovery and scientific documentation of dinosaur fossils in Britain during the early 19th century, notable for its emphasis on the work of Mary Anning in addition to that of Gideon Mantell, William Buckland, and Richard Owen. Though Anning's work as a fossil collector has been well-known to specialists and historians since the Victorian Era, this volume was an early part of the revival of popular interest in her life which began in 1999 at the 200th anniversary of her birth, and which has continued in recent years with novels and films, as well as an initiative to place a statue of her in Lyme Regis.
