The bookplate states that the book was rebound to its present form in 1901. The front part of the book has has "The Wreck of the Chancellor " for pp 7- 217 with a blank page then Martin Paz" for pages 219- 285. Overall, a very good copy. Note: due to size and weight, Shipping outside the USA may cost more than an average book.

Containing the title novel, as well as 'A Drama in the Air' and 'Ascent of Mont Blanc,' with 'Martin Paz' paginated separately, telling a Romeo and Juliet style romance set in Lima, Peru. This translation first published in 1874.

A worn and tatty copy with cloth rubbed through and board material showing through at corners; shallow chipping to cloth at tail and less so at crown of spine. Light to moderate soiling to boards with some fading to gilt designs at spine. Binding shaken with several signatures sprung and starting. Mild foxing scattered in text with some occasional finger soiling and spotting. Some light shallow damp staining in the margins of the first and last 10 or so leaves. Endpages splitting in the hinges; frontis tissue guard heavily foxed. Prior ownership gift inscription to blank front endpage. Complete copy with plates in generally clean condition - but overall worn and tatty. A restoration or filler copy. Good only.

Originally written in French in 1872, this copy is the first American edition and first edition in English, published in 1873. Bound in orange/brown publisher's cloth, illustrated cover bears ornamentation and text in both blind-stamp and gilt. All edges red stain. Black endpapers. Red and black title page. Frontispiece is a black and white illustration of Jules Verne's boat "Le Saint Michael", protected by a tissue leaf. vii, 291 pp. Jules Verne (1828-1905), a French novelist, poet, and playwright, has been the second most-translated author in the world since 1979 below Agatha Christie and above William Shakespeare. (Wikipedia).CONDITION: Mild wear with light chipping at the head and foot of the spine. Spine is cocked. 1 inch closed tear at the foot of frontispiece. Hinges are lightly starting, yet boards are well-affixed and binding is sound. Leaves have lightly toned. Completely unmarked except for what looks to be accidental pen markings on the back endpapers. A delightful, solid little copy. Full refund if not satisfied.

Green cloth with black and gold impressing on front and spine, blank impressing on rear. Bevelled edges. Front cover shows Master Zacharius raising the trap door in the floor of his workshop while spine shows the earthbound "madman" who falls out of the balloon in "A Drama in the Air." Corners bumped, small tears in spine ends. Hinges crackng internally. Bookplate on front pastedown, tear in front free endpaper, section removed from next leaf with small ink notation. Mylar wrap (removed for photos). Includes four short stories by Jules as well as a fifth story by his brother Paul. The stories by Jules are among his earliest, "A Drama in the Air," his second story, appearing in an 1851 periodical. "Master Zacharius" was his fourth published story in 1854 and "A Winter amid the Ice" was his fifth in 1855. "Dr. Ox" did not appear until 1872. Paul's "Ascent of Mont Blanc" is at rear. Osgood published the first edition in English in mid-1874 in a small unillustrated volume. William F. Gill of Boston published the first somewhat-illustrated edition dated 1874 under the title "From the Clouds to the Mountains." Taves & Michaluk V012. Myers 16.
